CT Murder Suspect Nabbed By US Marshals

Police in Fairfield County nabbed a man wanted for the murder of another man last month.

Gerome Philips, age 23, of the Bronx, was arrested on Tuesday, June 8 by US Marshals and extradited to Waterbury, on Friday, June 11, said Sgt. Robert Davis of the Waterbury Police.

Philips faces charges regarding the murder of 25-year-old James Smith of Waterbury on Thursday, May 13.

Philips was charged with:

  • Murder
  • Criminal use of a weapon
  • Carrying a pistol without a permit
  • Illegal discharge of a firearm
  • Illegal sale or transfer of a pistol or revolver.

He is being held on a $2 million bond.

The victim, James David Smith, age 26, had recently moved to Waterbury from New York, Davis said.

Smith sustained gunshot wounds to the head and body area and was pronounced dead on the scene. 

This investigation remains open and continues to be investigated by the Waterbury Police Department’s Major Crime Detectives.
